Tiospa Zina Tribal School

161 years ago on this day the start of the Inyansan Paha (White Stone Hill) massacre started. As our ancestors were gathered and preparing for winter the massacre ensued. The following information is found on the ND state historical society website regarding this tragic event. “Whitestone Hill State Historic Site, located 23 miles southeast of Kulm, Dickey County, marks the scene of the fiercest clash between Indians and white soldiers in North Dakota. On September 3, 1863, General Alfred Sully's troops attacked a tipi camp of Yanktonai, some Dakota, Hunkpapa Lakota, and Blackfeet (Sihasapa Lakota), as part of a military mission to punish participants of the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Many Indian men, women, and children died or were captured. Military casualties were comparatively light. The Indians also suffered the destruction of virtually all of their property, leaving them nearly destitute for the coming winter.” Today some of the Tiospa Zina HS Dakota History students will be in attendance of a memorial horse ride as riders from Crow creek, standing rock and Sisseton traveled from the Crow Creek reservation to this beautiful place to honor and remember our ancestors whom perished on this day 161 years ago. They will get to see the riders ride in and hear some of the history of this place. 🦅We are excited to announce that TZ Middle School will be implementing Project/Problem Based Learning (PBL) this 24-25 school year! 🥳 🦅Research shows that (PBL) can be an effective strategy for students across grade levels, content areas, and backgrounds. PBL can improve student achievement, social and emotional learning, and long-term retention. 🦅PBL is equitable, culturally responsive and culturally relevant as we will be implementing Dakota Wičoȟaŋ into our curriculum and lessons. 🦅PBL is fun and engaging for students. 🦅Our MS teachers have spent the last year observing a successful PBL academy, training at PBL World conference, and are continuing to train in PBL professional development to be the best teachers for our kids! 🦅We will be offering educational information on PBL for families as school approaches. He currently just finished the UFL season with the St. Louis Battlehawks. He is a 2023 XFL Champion with the Arlington Renegades! In 2020 he was a Wuerffel Trophy winner while at the University of New Mexico for his community service.
