Tiospa Zina has a unique project going on that can be seen from afar! We call it the Can Oyate project. The school received a grant that specifies that students will learn horticulture skills that are traditionally relevant to the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate through creating a forested schoolyard. They are planting, nurturing, and maintaining traditional and beneficial greenery while growing their green thumbs. The forested schoolyard will provide both student and community learning and gathering opportunities.
The summer school students did much of the planting and nurturing during June, and throughout July a crew of staff and students continued nurturing duties, as well as began planning and establishing gathering areas of the forested school yard! Here are some highlights of the summer activities.
